Why algorithmic speed can be more important than algorithmic accuracy

چکیده

Artificial Intelligence (AI) often outperforms human doctors in terms of decisional speed. For some diseases, the expected benefit a fast but less accurate decision exceeds slow more one. In such cases, we argue, it is justified to rely on medical AI maximise speed – even if than doctors.

Can Tractable Algorithmic-level Explanations Be Evolved?

Computational-level theories of cognition often postulate functions that are computationally intractable (e.g., NPhard or worse). This seems to render such theories computationally and cognitively implausible. One account of how humans may nevertheless compute intractable functions is that they exploit parameters of the input of these functions to compute the functions efficiently under conditi...

Speed scaling: An algorithmic perspective

Speed scaling has long been used as a power-saving mechanism at a chip level. However, in recent years, speed scaling has begun to be used as an approach for trading off energy usage and performance throughout all levels of computer systems. This wide-spread use of speed scaling has motivated significant research on the topic, but many fundamental questions about speed scaling are only beginnin...

Why Experimentation can be better than \ Perfect

Many problems correspond to the classical control task of determining the appropriate control action to take, given some (sequence of) observations. One standard approach to learning these control rules, called behavior cloning, involves watching a perfect operator operate a plant, and then trying to emulate its behavior. In the experimental learning approach, by contrast, the learner rst guess...

Can there be more predators than prey?

One of the few general “theorems” of ecology is the statement that in a given habitat there can be no more species present than the number of limiting resources. Our aim is to examine several of the versions of this “theorem” present in the literature, to compare them and to consider the underlying assumptions and definitions so as to decide to what ecological situations the theorem is applicab...

Parallel Genetic Algorithm Using Algorithmic Skeleton

Algorithmic skeleton has received attention as an efficient method of parallel programming in recent years. Using the method, the programmer can implement parallel programs easily. In this study, a set of efficient algorithmic skeletons is introduced for use in implementing parallel genetic algorithm (PGA).A performance modelis derived for each skeleton that makes the comparison of skeletons po...
